What is Human Design?

Human Design is an energy map calculated from your birth date, time and place. It describes how you are designed to use your energy, how to make decisions in the right timing, and where you are most open to the people around you. It is not a prediction of the future — it is a tool for understanding yourself.

What Human Design is

Human Design is a self-knowledge system that synthesizes several older traditions: Western astrology (planetary positions at birth), the Chinese I Ching with its 64 hexagrams, the Kabbalistic Tree of Life, the Hindu chakra system and ideas from modern physics about neutrinos.

It was transmitted by Ra Uru Hu (born Alan Robert Krakower) in 1987 on the island of Ibiza, Spain, and has since spread worldwide.

The output is a diagram called the Bodygraph: 9 energy centers, 36 channels and 64 gates. It shows which parts of your energy are consistent (defined) and which are open (undefined) and therefore shaped by your environment.

How a Human Design chart is calculated

The calculation needs three things: birth date, birth time and birth place (to convert local time to UTC). From these, the positions of the Sun, Earth, Moon, the lunar Nodes and the eight planets are computed — 13 points in total.

What makes Human Design distinctive is that it calculates two sets. Personality (black, or violet on this site) is computed at the exact moment of birth and represents the self you experience as "me". Design (red) is computed when the Sun was 88 degrees before its birth position — roughly 88 days before birth — and represents the body and what runs unconsciously.

1 Convert the birth date and time to UTC using the birth place's time zone
2 Compute the ecliptic longitude of all 13 points at birth (Personality) and when the Sun was 88° earlier (Design)
3 Map each longitude onto a Gate and Line of the Rave Mandala (each gate spans 5.625°, divided into 6 lines)
4 If both gates of a channel are activated, that channel is defined and defines the two centers it connects
5 From the defined centers, derive Type, Strategy, Authority, Profile, Definition and the Incarnation Cross

The 5 Types and their Strategy

Type is the biggest picture in the chart: how your energy works with the world. Each Type has a Strategy that lets life flow, plus a signature feeling when you are on track and a not-self theme when you are forcing things.

Generator ~37%: The life force of the world, with a defined Sacral center. Strategy: wait to respond. Signature: satisfaction. Not-self: frustration.
Manifesting Generator ~33%: A Generator with a motor connected to the Throat — fast and multi-tasking. Strategy: respond, then inform before acting.
Manifestor ~9%: The initiator, with a motor connected to the Throat and no Sacral. Strategy: inform before acting. Signature: peace. Not-self: anger.
Projector ~20%: The guide who sees people and systems deeply; no Sacral and no motor to the Throat. Strategy: wait for the invitation. Signature: success. Not-self: bitterness.
Reflector ~1%: No defined centers at all — a mirror for the community. Strategy: wait a lunar cycle (about 28 days) before big decisions. Signature: surprise. Not-self: disappointment.

The 7 Authorities (how you decide)

Authority is your reliable inner decision-making signal. It is determined by the defined centers in this order of priority: Solar Plexus → Sacral → Spleen → Ego → G → Ajna/Head → none (Lunar).

Emotional: Clarity comes after the emotional wave settles. Never decide big things instantly; sleep on it.
Sacral: Trust the gut's first response — the "uh-huh / uh-uh" sound comes before reasons.
Splenic: You know in the moment. It speaks softly and once; waiting means missing it.
Ego: Ask "do I really want this?" and commit only to what the heart truly wants.
Self-Projected: Direction becomes clear when you talk it out with someone you trust — the answer is in your own voice.
Mental / Environmental: Talk with several people in environments that feel right, to hear yourself process.
Lunar: For Reflectors: wait a full lunar cycle, about 28 days, before big decisions.

The 9 energy centers

Each center governs a life theme. Colored (defined) centers are energy you have consistently and can rely on. Open centers are where you take in and amplify the energy of others — both a sensitivity and your deepest source of wisdom.

Head: Inspiration, questions, mental pressure
Ajna: Processing, opinions, understanding
Throat: Communication, expression, action
G / Self: Direction, identity, love
Ego / Heart: Willpower, self-worth, promises
Spleen: Instinct, health, survival fears
Solar Plexus: Emotions, feelings, the emotional wave
Sacral: Life force, work energy, sexuality
Root: Pressure, stress, adrenaline

The 12 Profiles (your life role)

Profile comes from the Line of the Personality Sun and the Design Sun, for example 1/3 or 5/1. There are 12 profiles, describing the role you play in life and your most natural way of learning. The six lines have these themes:

Line 1 Investigator: Needs a solid foundation; confidence comes from depth of knowledge
Line 2 Hermit: Natural talent, needs private space, gets called out by others
Line 3 Martyr: Learns by trial and error, discovers what doesn't work
Line 4 Opportunist: Opportunities come through network and friendship
Line 5 Heretic: Projected on as the problem-solver; offers practical solutions
Line 6 Role Model: Three life phases: trial (before 30) → observing (30–50) → role model (50+)

Other elements of the chart

Definition: How many groups your defined centers form: Single, Split, Triple Split, Quadruple Split or None (Reflector). It shows whether you process everything within yourself or complete through other people.
Incarnation Cross: Your biggest life theme, from the Sun and Earth gates on both sides. Three angles: Right Angle (personal destiny), Juxtaposition (fixed fate), Left Angle (transpersonal, tied to people).
Variables (the four arrows): The arrows beside the head describe tendencies in digestion, environment, motivation and perspective. They come from the Tone, a subdivision of the Line.
Gates / Gifts: The 64 gates correspond to the I Ching hexagrams. Each gate carries its own gift; the Personality Sun gate is your most prominent one.

How to use Human Design in daily life

The simplest starting point is to experiment with your Strategy and Authority for a while. If you are a Generator with Emotional Authority, try "let things come to you, then sleep on it before answering" and notice whether frustration in your life decreases.

What is Human Design in one paragraph?

Do I need my exact birth time?

Ideally yes. The Moon and some centers can change within hours, which can change your Type or Authority. If you don't know it, this site uses noon and warns that results may be off. Check your birth certificate or ask family for accuracy.

Which Type is the best?

No Type is better than another. Each plays a different role and they need each other. What matters is using your own Type's Strategy and Authority in the right timing.

How is Human Design different from astrology or MBTI?

Astrology interprets planetary positions as personality and events; MBTI is a questionnaire you answer yourself. Human Design also uses planetary positions but maps them through the I Ching into a Bodygraph, and focuses on decision-making mechanics and energy use rather than prediction or personality typing.

Is Human Design accurate or reliable?

The planetary calculation is precise astronomy, but the interpretation is not scientifically validated. Use it as a reflection tool and keep what matches your real experience.

What is the Design date or the 88 days before birth?

It is the moment when the Sun was 88 degrees before its birth position, about 88–89 days before birth. Human Design holds that the Design side (red) — the body and what runs unconsciously — is set at that time.
